How to Install Themes on Ubuntu 18.04 using Gnome Tweaks

In order to install and set up themes on Ubuntu, you can download themes using PPA repository or from the web but you need a separate tool for setting up the external themes. There are couples of tools who allows setting themes but I am going through Gnome tweaks tools that are easy to install and set-up. So, let’s get started step by step. Because GNOME tweaks tool is easy so far.

Steps to follow:

  • Download Pop OS theme.
  1. Using PPA
  2. from the web
  3. from archive file
  • Install Gnome Tweaks tools.
  • Set the theme

In this article I shall install and set up Pop OS theme You can choose any theme as per your choice.

Download Pop OS theme

Let’s download the Pop OS theme which is made by System76.

1.Download theme using PPA

You can download using PPA by following series of commands.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:system76/pop
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install pop-theme
This will download Pop icon, GTK and Gnome shell theme. Now your system has the theme Pop OS is available and you don’t have to do anything. We will see later in this article that how to change theme using Unity Tweaks tool.

Now let’s see other ways to installing ubuntu themes.

2.Using .deb package

Some themes offer to download from .deb executable file. What you have to do is download .deb executable file from the web and simply double click on the file. Then you can install the theme like a software from snap store.

3.Using archive files to install ubuntu themes

The most common way to install themes is to install from archive files. Most of the theme providers provide the theme in the zip file or tar archive form.

mkdir ~/.themes
mkdir ~/.icons

You have installed the theme on your system, now the time to install Gnome tweak tool for changing the theme.

Install Gnome Tweaks tools.

Gnome tweak tool is available on the Ubuntu snap store you can install easily. Rather than go and find Tweaks on snap store you can use this command also

sudo apt install gnome-tweak-tool

Set The Theme

Once Tweaks installed, Go inside the tweaks by clicking on Tweaks in-app menu. When you start the Tweaks you can see on the first page, there is a couple of options. Applications option for changing the theme. And for Icons theme Icons options is there, you can change from here easily.

Troubleshoot

If you are seeing the error icon on the front of the shell, It means you have not installed GNOME Shell extension. GNOME Shell extension is used to change the theme.

Don’t worry, You can install GNOME shell extension just by one command

sudo apt install gnome-shell-extensions

Remember: After installing the GNOME shell extension you need to restart your system and open again the Tweaks. Then go to the Extensions tab and on the User Themes option.
